Blogs : Views from the Rail : Kauai

So in my last post I mentioned that Jen and I were going to Hawaii at the first opportunity. Well luckily for us, it presented itself about 2 days later. I booked a trip to Kauai, one of the small/main Hawaiian islands. I could tell how surprised and happy Jen was when I emailed her and asked her to take a couple days off. As you could probably tell from the last post, both Jen and I desperately needed a vacation.

Well, when I booked the trip, I realized that we’d be scrambling to get everything together. We had less trouble than I thought though as we both decided to pack extremely light. After all, it was only going to be a 3 day trip. We got to the airport in plenty of time, which is, for me, a spectacular accomplishment. And we were off.

Despite a couple long layovers, the flight in was relatively painless. There were a couple movies, “Love Happens” and “This is It”. The first was actually not the worst. The second… Well, lets just say I’m happy I slept through most of it.

When we finally got off the plane, we had to find a way to our hotel. We had decided that we were going to spend the long weekend hanging out on the beach and walking around. So we decided not to rent a car. This turned out to be a good decision as we had more than enough to occupy all of our time.

This was one of the most chill vacations I’ve ever had. We spent most of our time hanging out on the beach, eating, and drinking delicious drinks. See below for more details about those. The hotel was absolutely gorgeous, and the surrounding area was incredibly beautiful. Seriously, it was the most picturesque place I’ve ever been. On our last night there, we ate at the hotel restaurant, “Red Salt”. It was, I decided after the meal, one of the top 3 meals I’ve ever had. Jen also ate beef for the first time in years (only a small bite) and she liked it!

I compiled the final list, in no particular order.

-Random Taqueria in San Francisco
-Red Salt in Hawaii
-Nobu in Las Vegas (probably with BBB, DD, Nina, JT, Pygmy, Alstarrt, HLSmike, others?)

Anyway, the week went super fast. Too fast. And it was finally time to leave.

Or was it? Our flight got canceled at the airport do to a mechanical issue and, because there is only one flight to the mainland every day, they put us up in an incredibly nice hotel for an extra night. So, despite the airport stress, we got a whole extra 14 hours in Hawaii, which was a nice little bonus.

I slept almost the whole way home and here I am. And here are some pictures!

Nice trip report, pictures are worth many words. Kauai is my favorite island in Hawaii. I don't know how many you saw but there must be a wild population of at least 20,000 chickens there. Makes me want to go back.
