Blogs : Busto to Robusto : A Little Background

I started out playing poker live at friends houses, usually playing 6-9 man sngs. This was a few years ago. Some of the kids who were cool enough to have atm cards starting putting some money online and we would donk around with it. I’m sure it was the same for many of you. Load up money, run good, build it up, then move up with 2 bi and lose it all. OMG I run so bad I would tell myself when I stacked out with TPNK 200bb deep.

After the summer of 2008 I deposited another $50 and ran it up, trying to follow some sort of bankroll management. I never got it very high, but it was nice and steady and I wasn’t doing anything stupid with it, that is until I decided to play some drunk blackjack and lose it all. So in December I loaded up another $50, telling myself that it was the last time I would ever put money online. I ran that money up to a few hundred dollars, and after luckboxing a donkament on stars was over $1k. I cashed out around $600 (my first time ever cashing out) and began grinding 25NL. I was pretty breakeven and began staking some friends in SNGs to try and keep building my roll. They ended up losing me money and I was left around $200. I told myself I’ll flip this, win and be back where I was, lose and I know poker wasn’t for me and I can just be done with it. I flipped it and lost. I was pretty bummed because as like a lot of people I had dreams of crushing the nosebleeds one day.

However, a few days later I saw a post on 2p2 where Dean, PartyGirlUK, posted in BBV about playing while on Ambien. A few weeks before this he posted in the HSNL forum offering a freeroll to the next 20 people that posted. He said he was going to send $2k to each of those 20 if he played while high on Ambien in some time period. Well, I was one of those 20 posters. Unfortunately he said he was not going to send out $2k to all of those people, he offered a little bit of money to the busto people who posted (a lot less than $2k :( ). Well, at least I had a roll again.

I started grinding 10NL way underrolled, took shots at 25NL way underolled, and wound up playing 50NL HU after selling a % to a friend, eventually finding myself with a proper roll for 25NL. I moved back down to 25NL and started grinding 6max again. Unfortunately, soon after this move down I started running terribly and began my decent towards busto. Determined to keep this roll alive (as I had promised I would never deposit any money online again) I moved down to 10NL when I reached $250. The run bad continued and I just got sick of it all. Using the same wonderful logic as before I decided to flip my roll, get back to even, or be done with it. Once again I flipped it and lost.

Once again I didn’t stay busto for long. My friend staked me in a 6max tourney on UB and I got 5th for $350. After paying the buyin back and sending the backer his percentage I was left with 115. Combined with the money I was able to get with my FPPs on Stars (They are running a special promo this month where you can get cash for FPPs) I had myself a small roll once again.

I was lucky enough in the past to always find a way to get a roll started without having to deposit or beg, but always was dumb enough to flip it, or play drunk BJ to lose it all. I recognize that this will probably be my last chances to build a solid bankroll without having to deposit (I can’t do that so a failure here = no more poker) so I am going to take it slow and steady, follow good bankroll management and try to climb up the stakes.

I plan to use this blog to record things as I try to make my ascent up the stakes. I have never blogged before so this will be a new experience for me. I usually hate writing but I found my first entry to be somewhat enjoyable to write so it could be interesting to see how this turns out. I don’t expect anyone to read or follow this, so I will be writing more for myself but we’ll see how it goes.
