I like check-calling this river vs. an unknown. I don't see a lot of value in a bet and would want to see if he'll bluff a missed draw. He might even check back a better 3 or a weak 5 that would call.

iirc he is a german NL nosebleeds player who is usually bumhunting like everyone else. cant be too good a FL HU player, but will be a nitty table selecter.

If you haven't watched the 8 fold path series do it. If you have watch it again. Probably good to watch every 6 months or so.

Also during a big downswing I'm a big fan of moving way down. I did this inadvertently a while back and there is no better way to get your head on straight then to crush 5 NL for 1000 hands IMO.

it should make you smile to know that people are making mistakes regardless of who the mistakes are against. i know its much easier said than done, but that is the mindset we should be striving for. you're going to get sucked out on, might as well get used to it.

So true however I think the best I can hope for is a balanced face - smile for the fish mistake + a frown for the where did my money go. If I can achieve this I will be happy. Definitely better than monkey tilting and shipping 72s off the hand after being sucked out hoping to hit the flush

With no read this seems like a pretty easy fold. Our draw is super weak and we're OOP with 7 high. Our pair outs, if we have any, could also be tainted by either flush draw if he's semi-bluffing.

The bad part about three-bet bluffing is it looks like we'd be priced in to call a cap. I guess a good read could change things but as a default I would fold and move on.

i'd probably raise if i was going to continue. i would prefer if he was a bit of a looser/worse player by stats, but i guess tighter 25nlers might occasionally donkbet air here. calling is a decent option but i think raising lets us put max pressure on something like pocket 5s.

In all of these, villain 3bets a wide (~35%) range and barrels the turn almost always (~90%). Is hand #1 a call down? How is the semi-bluff in hand #2? How good is the peel in hand #3?

@churbruv My first thought was ship river too, but as much as I don't think he has a boat I thought he might not call a shove with anything less. With so little money behind (I missed that) he probably calls with some 2 pair hands.

its very unlikely that he raises the river with a hand that isn't going to stack off considering 1) people dont raise the river without a strong hand, and 2) he's gonna be getting incredible odds.

i'm shoving the river...you only lose if he flatted QQ/JJ/AA preflop or checked 44 on the turn. i would also c-bet the flop rather than c/c as i think it will be more profitable to maintain the initiative.

I got your point. Different approaches for BR. Mine are really strict and I am happy about it so far.

i think his point is that we should try not to let 5 BI bother b/c once we have more experience and start picking up the hand volume teh 5 BI swings are going to be very frequent, and its going to cost you money if you can't stay on your A-game when they occur. just another aspect of the game to work on as well as proper strategy.

You have to take into account that villain wont always get it in when you flop a set and the times you do get it in but your hand is second best by the river.

yeah 15-1 is pretty standard. the tighter your opponent preflop and the worse he is postflop the less odds we need.

I now agree with this too. As you note, the money goes in better if Hero bets and we shouldn't feel at all uncomfortable folding to a raise, especially given our read. For my own part, I think this seemed like a closer spot than it really is because I was putting too much weight on seeing a sd. In this case, we already have a read and in any event I feel like I'm being reminded in recent threads not to take second best lines all the time just because I want a peek at villain's cards.

I think i make it more like 14500 or 15000. That's big enough to maximize your fold equity which is something you want to do when you're 3b with napkins. It's also small enough that you can still confidently fold to a shove.

Generally when I'm oop I'm going to be making my 3b sizing bigger than when I 3b ip. The reason being is you're trying to maximize fold equity and shrink stack-to-pot ratio oop.
